Website Design – Factors to consider and some tips

Website Design – We have just signed off on www.TMPlumbingandHeating.ie and we thought it might be a good idea to document some best practice and some handy tips that should be incorporated into a website design project.

Website Design – Planning a Website

First things first, who is your website for?  It’s not for you, but for your users.  Then you must ‘define’ who your users are.  Who is your target audience? What is the objective of your website?   Is it to inform, sell, entertain, promote, etc.?

Then you must undertake your keyword analyses, what keywords might be associated with your website’s objectives and target audience?  Build pages around your chosen keywords and assign keywords around the links on your website, as close as possible.

Website Design – Some Questions that will help

There are questions you can pose to yourself that will help your website design, such as:

Are there any similar websites already? What can you do differently or better?

Who do you want to attract to your website and that answer will effect the look, design and content of your site.  Your website should be designed for your audience and not some random visitor.

Website Design – Backlinks and some Tips

Internal links also have value so we must remember to link our own pages together too.  See the links within this blog post (there are about ten).

A professional design, good layout and more importantly good content will increase the number of inbound links and decrease your bounce rate.  A high bounce rate will impart your SEO performance.

Create content that people will want to share and which will encourage them to return to your website (thus improving your traffic, which is another SEO ranking factor).  So, its important you build a blog into your site, which will enable you to upload quality content with ease.

Be careful about entering into deals to trade links or buying countless backlinks – Search Engines can be quite punitive when it comes to tackling black hat SEO activities.

Where possible, contribute to high quality blogs and seek to create links back to your website

You must offer the blogger a valuable contribution as most bloggers do not want to devalue their blog with thinly veiled advertisements and spam.  Otherwise you may have to pay for a backlink.

Analyse and research the inbound links for the sites that are ranking above you in order to improve your own performance.  For more tips on backlinks, see this page.
